Slinky is one in a set of pieces exploring interleaved structures, whereby developments with distinct identities are divided into segments and alternated in succession. In this piece, the segments of each identity act as sections of the holistic structure. A unique quality of interleaved structures is that returns to an identity are better described as continuation than repetition or variation, and consequently, the full development of each identity is only revealed over the duration of the piece. When those developments significantly transform the characters of the identities then dynamic relationships are likely to emerge between the various sections of the piece. Slinky was originally composed at City University, London in 2004 and revised in 2009. The work appears on the International Computer Music Conference 2009 compact disc.
